Interested in joining us?

Thanks for your interest in joining the Earth Observation & Spatial Ecology Lab. I generally support one or two new graduate students each year depending on research funding, space, and your ability to secure scholarships. Current research opportunities are listed below. If you are interested in applying for graduate school and joining the lab please contact me well in advance of the application deadlines for Earth & Environmental Sciences. Details on the MSc and PhD programs in Earth & Environmental Sciences are available through the Department.

There are a number of funding opportunities for Canadian graduate students including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Master’s and Doctoral programs, as well as the Vanier for PhD students (the Vanier is also open to international students). There are also numerous UBC scholarships available as well as potential teaching assistant positions.

Postdoctoral funding is available through the Banting, KillamLiber Ero, and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship programs. If you are interested in applying for one of these opportunities please contact me well in advance of deadline.

If you are interested in joining the lab please send i) a statement of research interest (specific to a position if there is one posted); ii) an unofficial copy of your transcripts; iii) your CV; and iv) any examples of scholarly outputs (e.g., papers, thesis) if applicable. I receive quite a few enquiries, so expressing how your research interests and experience align with our research program helps.

As a supervisor, I ensure my students have the support and flexibility needed to explore scientific questions in a diverse and inclusive research environment. We are very fortunate to work in some incredible locations with supportive research partners and given our research focus much of our work is very quantitative. Experience with programming and data analysis skills, or a willingness to put in the work to learn, is a must.

If this sounds like a good fit then I look forward to hearing from you!
